Why Hire a Car in Agadir for a Road Trip?

Public transport in southern Morocco works for getting between major cities, but it does not get you to the places worth seeing. The argan forest road between Agadir and Essaouira. The switchbacks up into the High Atlas from Marrakech. The surf camps and hidden coves north of Taghazout. These require a car.

Agadir Al Massira Airport is one of Morocco's busiest entry points for European tourists, and it sits at the gateway to some of the country's most varied driving. Within 3 hours you can be in the Sahara foothills, in a 1,000-year-old medina, or watching the Atlantic from a clifftop above Essaouira.

All our rentals include unlimited mileage. There is no per-kilometre charge, no restriction on how far you drive, and no surcharge for crossing between regions. One daily rate covers every kilometre of your road trip.

Top Road Trip Routes from Agadir

Five routes we recommend to every traveller hiring a car from us. Each one is detailed in its own dedicated guide below.

175 km 2h 30min

Agadir to Essaouira

The most scenic coastal drive in Morocco. The road hugs the Atlantic for much of the route and passes through the UNESCO-listed argan forest. Essaouira's blue-and-white medina and constant sea wind make it the ideal contrast to sunny Agadir.

260 km 3h 30min

Agadir to Marrakech

The road through the Tizi n'Test mountain pass is one of the great drives in North Africa. If you take the faster N10 route you trade mountain drama for speed. Either way, Marrakech rewards the drive. We recommend at least one night before returning.

Agadir to Taghazout

The easiest day trip from Agadir and one of the most rewarding. Taghazout has transformed from a fishing village into Morocco's surf capital. The road north takes you through Paradise Valley, one of the most beautiful gorges in the country.

Atlas Mountains 4x4 Route

The Anti-Atlas mountains east of Agadir are underexplored and stunning. The piste roads between Taroudant and the Jebel Sirwa require a 4x4. We hire Dacia Dusters specifically for this route and it is among the most requested trips from our customers.

Road Trip Tips from Our Local Team

We have been putting customers on the roads of southern Morocco since 2018. A few things we tell every road tripper before they leave.

Fill up before mountain routes

Fuel stations get sparse once you leave the main N roads. Always fill the tank in Agadir or Taroudant before heading into the mountains.

Download offline maps

Mobile coverage drops in the Atlas valleys. Download your route on Google Maps or Maps.me before you leave Agadir.

Keep documents accessible

Moroccan police checkpoints are routine on most routes. Keep your passport, driving licence, and rental agreement in the glove compartment, not in the boot.

Start mountain routes early

Mountain passes like Tizi n'Test can close in poor weather and are harder to navigate after dark. Leave Agadir by 8am for any route over 200km.

It depends on your route. The main tarmac roads to Essaouira, Marrakech via the N10, and Taghazout are all suitable for a standard hatchback or saloon. However, if you plan to explore the Atlas mountain piste roads, Jebel Sirwa, or any off-road tracks, you will need a 4x4. We hire Dacia Dusters specifically for these routes. Our Atlas mountains 4x4 guide covers exactly which roads require it.

Yes, Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes are reachable from Agadir in around 8 to 9 hours. This is a multi-day trip and we recommend a 4x4 for the final approach roads near the dunes. There are no geographic restrictions in your rental agreement for driving within Morocco. Contact us on WhatsApp before booking and we will advise on the best vehicle for your specific route.

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best seasons for driving in southern Morocco. Summer temperatures in the interior can exceed 45 degrees Celsius which makes mountain driving uncomfortable and hard on vehicles. Winter is generally fine on coastal routes but mountain passes can be affected by snow from December through February.
